The degree of public excitement stirred by the first space flight in now unimaginable: we saw film taken from the Sputnik that altered our perception of gravity learnt from Galileo.
The painting was made soon after the event. It tells of my fear in confronting the phenomena destroying our illusion that earth was an impregnable refuge for us in space.
Planet Earth represented our sweet mother, in some sense inviolate and alone. The ultimate private retreat for mankind could now by implication be explored, or viewed, by aliens.
One mighty blast of energy from the Soviet rocket has exploded the many timeless myths that dwelt in our subconscious and began a new re-examination of our relationship to earth.
