A break in my routine happened when I was unexpectedly awarded a scholarship, paid at German government civil servant rates, to paint at a studio in the country outside Bremen.
Instituted by another altruistic patron, Martin Kausche, this studio adjoined Pferdeweiden, the flat lands where countless horses have always been let loose to breed and develop freely.
This was an opportunity to study their behaviour closely, drawing and painting the grace of these hugely athletic creatures and observing the nuances of their relationships over a year.
This subject still engrosses me; I paint mares slowly towing awkward fragile foals which create moving points of focus over the parkland in front of our family home at Trefeife.
